SATs

Children in Year 2 (Key Stage 1) and Year 6 (Key Stage 2) sit their SATs tests in May each year.

Key Stage 1 – Year 2:

There are 2 papers: Reasoning and Arithmetic

Arithmetic consists of questions based on the four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division -as well as fractions.

Reasoning questions children on all areas of mathematics, including word problems and may be presented in tables, sentences and diagrams.

As well as the tests, teachers make assessments based on your child’s every day work in the classroom to make their final judgement.

Key Stage 2 – Year 6:

Children sit three papers in maths:

Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes

Papers 2 and 3: reasoning, 40 minutes per paper

Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division. Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including:

  • Multiple choice
  • True or false
  • Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart
  • Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem

PUMA

At West Felton we use the Rising Stars Maths Assessment – PUMA.

From Years 1-6 children sit the test each term based on all areas of mathematics. Reception begin this during the Summer Term only. Each term the test gets progressively more difficult as more has been covered by the children. The coverage coincides with our Medium Term Planning using the Hodder objectives. From this assessment we can analyse strengths and weaknesses, produce a Standardised Score and Maths age which we can share with parents.

As well as Statutory Assessments and Whole School Assessments each class may assess as necessary such as times tables tests, number bond checks, and end of unit assessments.
