Reading is something we are exceptionally passionate about here at West Felton.

The teaching of Reading at West Felton is based on Letters and Sounds, we have a comprehensive scheme which all teachers adhere to.

This element is on our School Development plan and includes the following success criteria:

  • Rigorous teaching of daily phonics
  • Professional development of all staff
  • Carefully matched reading books
  • Consistent use of word mats, flash cards, displays
  • Highly effective early intervention programme
  • Consistent, effective intervention for those in KS2 who are not making expected progress
  • Consistent and effective teaching of spelling and handwriting in KS2

Further information on Early Reading can be found here, including a guide to phonics and several helpful links.

At school, we will hear our children read as much as we possibly can, individually, in groups and as a whole class. This will be recorded in your child’s Reading Record.

Our children will be provided with appropriate reading materials, including phonics, tricky words and high-frequency words as well as high-quality texts.

We expect our children to read at home with an adult as much as they possible can, with a minimum expectation of 4 times per week for 10 minutes or more. This will be recorded in your child’s Reading Record.

Every time your child reads at home, pop your signature on their Reading Map which is the back of their Reading Diaries. When the map is completed children will receive a certificate on the 1st occasion, a book mark on the 2nd occasion and a book on the 3rd occasion and thereafter.

Reading is one of the most important things you can do with your child to support their development.

Its benefits are vast and far reaching.

This may help you support your child reading at home, if you would like further advice or support, please do not hesitate to ask your child’s class teacher:

Beat the Summer Slide…

Not only are we passionate about reading throughout term time, we always know how important it is to keep reading throughout the school holidays, particularly the long summer break. For the last two years, we have hosted a series of ‘Beat the Summer Slide’ picnics. Pupils who continue to read regularly throughout the summer are invited to our picnics with their friends and family. They get to choose a free book to take home, they enjoy a free delicious picnic and can be entertained by the one and only Jake the Storyteller.

This initiative is entirely supported by local organisations and business including West Felton Parish Council, St. Michael’s Church, Suckley’s Farm, NFU Oswestry, Miele Boiler Repairs and Aico.

Last year we presented more than 50 books for our children to enjoy.
