Physical Education

At West Felton C. of E Primary School, we believe PE & Sport plays an important role in making our  pupils happy and healthy individuals.  We aim to develop a balanced program offering a variety of activities which provide students with an opportunity to develop high levels of fitness, a broad spectrum of skills and the knowledge necessary to use the skills developed for a lifetime of active participation.  We believe sport can be enjoyed by all, whatever their age or physical ability.

Our big concepts in PE at West Felton:

  • Promote and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle
  • Encourage teamwork, fair play show respect and good sportsmanship.
  • Develop skills, confidence and enjoyment by participating in a broad range of physical activities
  • Be resilient learners who don’t give up and have a positive attitude to winning and losing.

P.E. and games takes place for all classes in the Forest room and on the school’s two playgrounds and field.   All children undertake gymnastics, dance, games, athletics and in Key Stage 2 swimming and outdoor and adventurous activities.   As a result of sports funding the children also have the opportunity to work with a variety of coaches throughout the school year.

Matches, tournaments and festivals in a wide range of sports are frequently arranged with other schools in the area and after school sports clubs are regularly on offer.
Swimming for Key stage 2 takes place in the Spring and Summer Terms at Oswestry school.

Shrewsbury Town coaches join us weekly for our PE lessons.

It is important that children have a clearly named P.E. kit in school at all times.

We are delighted to announce that we, West Felton CofE Primary School, have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2022/23 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

Our sporting achievements this year include:

  • 81% of our Y6 pupils can successfully swim 25m or more.
  • We hosted various sporting clubs including Football, High 5, Running, Hockey, Dance and Rounders.
  • Every single class participated in the Skip2BeFit initiative.
  • Each class has participated in personal sporting challenges throughout the year.
  • The Monday Mile is firmly established in KS2.
  • Y6 play leaders encouraged our younger pupils to participate in active games during break times.
  • A tennis coach worked regularly with Willow & Sycamore.
  • We participated in lots of tournaments and festivals including: High 5, Tag rugby, dodgeball, hockey, kurling, cross country, Football (mixed, girls and boys), rugby, cricket, multisport, bowling and area sports.
  • Every single Y3 and Y6 pupils competed in at least 1 inter-school competition with 93% of Y4 and 95% of Y5. We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible.

As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.

A special thanks to:

Mrs. Morgan who co-ordinates PE and works exceptionally hard to meet such high standards.

We look forward to applying once again in 2024!
