Spring Term 1 – Hot and Cold
Literacy – Fiction:. Pig in the pond, Hello World, Diary of a Wombat, Josephine wants to dance. Postcard writing, Diary writing, description. Nouns, verbs and adjectives, types of sentences and suffixes/prefixes.
Non-Fiction: Information texts about Hot and Cold Countries, Australia and animals. Labelling a diagram and finding information.
Poetry: Humorous Poems/ A study of Spike Milligan.
Maths –Number and place value, addition and subtraction, measuring mass
Science – Hot and cold habitats, what animals/ plants are found in different climates, their features & adaptations. The basic needs of animals and plants. How animals initially look after their young. Co-dependency of animals and plants in an environment.
Geography – Identify the location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator and the North and South Poles. Identifying continents and seas. Weather symbols and the forecast.
History – Finding out about events beyond living memory that are significant nationally and globally – Scott of the Antarctic.
ICT – Internet safety. ‘Off we go’ make decisions about bear’s journey. ‘Postcard maker’ ‘ ‘Weather words’ – use words to describe a scene. Find out how the weather forecast service uses ICT.
PE – Gymnastics with Border Counties. PE – Hit, Catch, Run. Wake Up Shake Up.
Art and DT – Design and make a shoe box hot or cold habitat scene, using a variety of materials and techniques, camouflage through art.
PSHE – Health and Well-being: Growing and Changing, Keeping Safe.
Music – Weather songs, using instruments to represent a sound, composing, chanting and singing.
RE – Why are some stories special?

Spring Term 2 – Animal Magic
Literacy – Fiction: Stories involving adventure – extending what happens to the pets in the ‘Great Pet sale’. We have covered lots of elements of SPAG already this year, new focus is on apostrophes for possession and contraction, we will be continuing to focus on commas in a list, punctuation, description including expanded noun phrases and adverbs for year 2. These will be covered throughout the whole half term in writing about animals. Non-Fiction: Writing a recount of our trip to Chester Zoo.Creating non-chronological reports s based upon our favourite animals. Poetry: Writing poetry based on animals. Writing riddles, using description to write a poem and acrostic poems.
Maths – Year 1/2 programmes of study. (We have also sent home a copy of the objectives for the spring term so you can see what we are covering each week via the app).
Science – Pets & animal needs. Animal body parts, their diet (herbivore/ carnivore/ omnivore). Identify animals in the local environments & finding ways of sorting & grouping. Identify what animals need to survive. Look at the life cycle of frogs & butterflies. See if we can set up a test to find out which is a hamster’s favourite food!
Geography – Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify countries, continents and oceans where different animals can be found.
History – Scientists/biologists who have discovered about the life of animals eg. Darwin.
ICT – Programming, algorithms and coding using Computers and Beebots. Using IPad to record and access animal apps.
PE – Gymnastics with Border Counties and PE with Miss Parry – Hit, Catch, Run (tennis, rounders, cricket), and Wake Up Shake Up.
Art and DT – Rousseau animal paintings. Paintings in the style of the artist. Creating animal patterns to explore colour, pattern, texture, line, form and space.
PSHE – Relationships, valuing difference.
Music –Animal songs, using instruments to represent a sound, composing, chanting and singing.
Worship – Justice
